Control of Substances Hazardous to Health Regulations (COSHH)
COSHH requires employers to:
- assess the risks to health from chemicals and decide what controls
are needed;
- use those controls and make sure workers use them;
make sure the controls are working properly;
- inform workers about the risks to their health;
train workers.

Although highly unlikely to affect practices of use, storage and
disposal of harmful substances within educational institutions,
the Control of Major Accident Hazards (COMAH) Regulations, has elements
of best practice for the storage of harmful substance, emergency
preparedness and accident procedures.
COMAH applies to any establishment having any specified substance
or substances with prescribed properties above the qualifying quantity
that may cause a major accident hazard. There are two tiers of regulation,
with stricter controls applying to the “top-tier” sites,
where higher quantities are stored. The Regulations include requirements
for notification of the competent authorities, risk assessment and
planning, safety management systems, preventative measures, and
reporting of major accidents.
