Discharge Consent System > Details

The key issue regarding cooling water systems is various contaminants (e.g., treatment additives, metal from piping, etc.) may enter the cooling water and if discharged to either a treatment works or to a surface water, then water pollution control regulatory requirements are likely applicable to your power plant.

All industrial waste waters (trade effluents) are subject to a discharge consent system under either the Water Resources Act 1991 or the Water Industry Act 1991.

Trade Effluents can be:

  • cooling water,
  • liquid process wastes,
  • detergents,
  • condensate water from compressed air installations,
  • waste chemicals, including oils
  • biodegradable liquids,
  • wash water,
  • liquid wastes or wash waters, other than domestic sewage, discharged using sinks, basins or toilets, and
  • contaminated mine or quarry water

Further information of discharges to surface waters, sewage systems and trade effluent can be seen here.
