Developer-Fixer Disposal/Silver Recovery
|
In a university medical facility, spent silver isn’t sterling-it’s
hazardous waste. Especially when it’s used in the taking and developing
of x-rays. Some of the materials used and produced as waste in this activity include:
developer/fixer waste, radiographic x-rays, photochemicals, film processing, scrap
film, discarded imaging films, fixer solutions and outdated chemicals.
Knowing what’s hazardous and what isn’t is the first step toward
managing hazardous waste. In fact, it is possible to reduce silver content to
the point where it’s no longer considered hazardous waste at all. You
also can take advantage of silver recovery technologies to:
- Reduce paperwork
- Save money by reducing disposal costs
- Support the environment by recycling and minimising waste
This section of the EVC will outline the pertinent waste regulations
for regulated materials and present alternatives for reducing the
silver content in a medical facility.
