STORAGE TANKS
> Details
Because requirements for underground and aboveground storage tanks differ, this
expanded section of the EVC will treat each category separately.
Below Ground Tanks
Underground storage tanks are exempt from the Control of Pollution (oil storage)
Regulations 2001. However, it is prudent to be aware of the general
legislation and best practice surround oil storage. Further details
can be viewed here:

Ground Oil Storage
Other specific legislation, as refered to in other sections such
as the EPA 1990 and 'Duty of Care' will still be applicable to the
safe handling and storage of oil.
The Environment Agency have also produced the following guide:
Groundwater
Protection Code: Petrol stations and other fuel dispensing facilities
involving underground storage tanks
This code is aimed at those people who are involved in the design,
construction, operation, management and decommissioning of underground
storage tank facilities, both retail and non-retail. It provides
guidance on the best practical option for groundwater protection,
based on the type of facility and outlines the risks to groundwater
which may occur at various stages of the life cycle of a petrol
station. it will also apply to underground storage facilities used
at airports, farms, ports, railway depots, scrapyards, vehicle depots
as well as industrial, commercial and domestic properties.
Above Ground Tanks
In England, if you store oil in containers with a capacity of more
than 200 litres, the Control of Pollution (Oil Storage) (England)
Regulations 2001 may apply to you.
