GreenBuild/BREEAM Higher Education

NB BREEAM for HE draft assessor manual content is below.

GreenBuild is a new LGM project, mainly financed by the four UK funding bodies and AUDE, with additional support from the Carbon Trust (see Greenbuild briefing document). It has two workstreams:

BREEAM Higher Education - a standard scheme for most university buildings which is being developed by BRE, in collaboration with the project (and with AUDE having a leading role);

High Performance Laboratories – actions to support environmental improvements in the design and management of labs, and to develop environmental awareness amongst staff and students.

The BREEAM HE stream has completed its initial consultation - see reports on the four meetings held at Edinburgh (March 10th); Cardiff (April 17th); London (May 14th); and Oxford (June 27th - focused on laboratories) - and paper summarising key issues, and next steps. A further update paper summarises the position as of August 2008. The next meeting - at BRE on October 13th - will focus on reviewing the draft assessor's manual. See agenda here.

Review of the BREEAM HE Draft Assessor's Manual

The manual has nine thematic sections (see below). Please provide feedback on the form which is contained at the end of this background document. We prefer detailed review of one or more sections to broad brush comments on the whole manual. Note that BREEAM in general changed in summer 2008, so some changes from previous bespoke versions for HE buildings are explained by this rather than the BREEAM for HE scheme.
