The University of Gloucestershire is the first large English university to gain ISO 14001. Click here for details.

Elmwood College, a small horticultural college in Scotland has also achieved ISO 14001 – click here for details.

In addition, several HEIs have achieved it for specialised parts of their activities:

Leeds Metropolitan University (for Financial Services, Faculty of Arts and Society, the Registrars and Secretaries Office and Learning and Information Services). The aim is to get the whole University certified by 2008. Click here for more details.

The University of Glamorgan was awarded ISO 14001 in 2002, across its whole campus, details can be seen here

Internationally, there are a number of universities that have achieved an externally recognised EMS accreditation:

University of Queensland, Australia – back in 1996 achieved ISO 14001, click here for details

University of Luneburg, Germany – click here for details

Polytechnic University of Valencia – click here for details.

Organisations outside the sector whose EMS has been sufficiently impressive to be the subject of case studies include:

Carillion Building, UK and Kier Construction (BSI case studies). Their approach to environmental management not only improves internal performance, but also client projects and construction in general.

Other BSI EMS case studies can be seen here
