Benchmarking

Energy Benchmarking Report
HEEPI have produced a report on their 2002-4 building energy benchmarking programme. Updated benchmarks for university residences are contained in a summary report from a workshop held in November 2006 (see also Energy Efficiency/Benchmarking Workshops below)

Energy Benchmarking Tool: CE Benchbuild
HEEPI have produced a new energy benchmarking tool, CEBenchbuild, designed specifically for Higher and Further Education Institutes.

This free Excel tool allows you to benchmark the energy performance of any number of buildings on your estate and compare it to National Yardsticks and HEEPI’s own benchmarks developed from previous benchmarking exercises. It also calculates carbon dioxide emissions and energy costs associated with energy use in buildings, and identifies those with the greatest potential for reductions in both. The tool can be used for single buildings, multiple buildings within a campus or multiple buildings across an entire estate.

Unlike other energy software, this tool allows comparison of energy performance both within your estate and with other universities (through comparison with the benchmarks). Participation in a series of HEEPI workshops, Autumn 2006 - Spring 2007, will also help to identify key features of buildings which are contributing to high energy consumption, and hopefully lead to better energy performance across the sector.

Click here to download the Excel tool (1.58MB) (remember to save it under a new name first before using; avoid opening it directly from a download) and click here to download the User Guide (388kB). Click here for a short summary of CE-Benchbuild and how to return data to HEEPI.

Energy Efficiency/Benchmarking Workshops

HEEPI have held a new round of improving energy efficiency through benchmarking workshops.

The first was held on Residences on 30 November 2006 at Kings College, London. Click here for a copy of the workshop report with updated benchmarks for fossil fuel and electrically heated residences.

The second was held on Laboratories on 26 April 2007 at University of Warwick. Click here for a copy of the workshop report with updated benchmarks for medical/bioscience, chemical science and physical engineering laboratories.

These participative workshops compared and analysed energy consumption in different HE buildings and produced updated energy benchmarks for the HE sector, as well as best practice guidance.
